Abbensen - Katharina Immekus

Abbensen is a village north of Hannover. In 2012 a number of nature drawings were made there, which
will now be shown in b2_’s smaller exhibition space.

The current series of oil paintings by Katharina Immekus are also drawn from nature but abstracted to
the point where the actual areas of forest are barely identifiable. In a similar manner to the previous
exhibition ‘Retake’, the images deal with the use of paint, surface and line rather than narration.

In Immekus’ image archive ‘Wald’ you can find around 50 line drawings that are continuously placed
on top of each other, either entirely or in pieces, until a dense, but sometimes also airy network of lines
emerges. Every layer of lines consists of another colour and an individual picture is always comprised of
three to five different colours. As a result of the painted lines that sporadically alternate between thick
and thin, a sense of controlled confusion and extreme openness arises simultaneously.

In order to question her own taste and avoid being consumed by her own aesthetic leanings, Immekus
asked friends and colleagues which colour combinations they preferred and then implemented them in
her images.
