In this online show "Open" we present you a collection of works that loosely gather around the idea of how the borders of our reality seem to shift in these times of global uncertainty and restrictions. We like to stay open...
For several years I visited the borders and border landscapes in a Europe that was forming itself anew – especially Eastern Europe and it's expansion of the Schengen area in 2004. The photographs show direct, invisible, dissolving and newly fortified borders. They show signs of restriction and exclusion, of guarding and control by the military. Places that are decaying and newly constructed checkpoints.

The transition from the shore to the settlement behind it. You can see porous, constantly changing, eroding coasts and the rubble brought by people: partly built upon, shaped, forgotten again and left to decay. The settlement, signs, strange fortifications, things left behind bear witness to the arrival in foreign lands, where even surreal events could take place.

There is something the matter with color in this country, or at least in this part of the country, the area where the traditional Chinese landscape painting originates. The atmosphere, which is often moist, misty, makes color merge into a kind of spaciousness. It seems the borders of things slightly evaporate, dissolve into the aura of their surroundings. Just once in a while a dark blue, clear yellow or specific kind of red stands out in this hazy field of connections.

... in the image of water, every reference is lost in a fluid, self-propelled process of never ending movement and expansion.
Renderings are a computationally intensive process of generating images. I replace calculation with experiment, and use this visual medium of planning in an uncontrolled and process-oriented way. The picture has no relation to reality, it is pure attribution.

... colors and shapes that appear simple, however, cross our known spatial relationships and figurative properties and refuse to be viewed from the perspective of reality.

These acrylic glass objects consist of a combination of transparent, translucent, opaque and light reflecting materials. I see them as light objects without their own light source. The formal appearance of the objects changes depending on the point of observation and due to the interaction with the surrounding light.

... aimlessly wandering through the neighborhood. Closed windows that allow the green on the inside to melt with the outside. This green, that provides refuge for the outside as it decorates the inside.

In this project I try to visualize what it means to be shut in. Serving time in prison means a continuous rotation of sleep, food, and work activities. It is the routines that shape the days. As a photographer, I bring my gaze into the prison with me. But as someone who’s on the outside of the prison fence, I also have to turn this gaze back on myself.

The reorganization of domestic dwellings will now hit all levels of our new stay-at-home societies in unpredictable and hopefully exciting and unusual ways. With envelopes full of luck, humanity will survive and find itself surrounded by extraordinary new setups. The human desire for de-cluttering is consolidated into whimsical collages.

The starting point is personal memories, from which I develop stagings of complex interpersonal relationships. The bodies of the portrayed people become carriers of meaning, posture, gestures, facial expressions and views - to themselves, and the others and the room. The social relationships are shown in the physical presence and the relationship of the characters to each other.
